The Women’s Luncheon was open to everyone in the congregation - men and women, a few people from the wider community participated as well. We worked with the Native American Advancement Foundation (NAAF) of the Guvo district of the Tohono O’odham and with NAAF representatives Juan Buendia and Selina Jesus to determine what members of the reservation could use. Leslie Bruce and Anne Morrison coordinated the effort. Liz Haynes and members of the Ruth and La Posada scripture Circles provided the baked potato bar for lunch. Patti Bright, upon learning a while ago that many reservation members do not have insulation or heat in their homes, approached her Mission quilters. They provided twenty quilts as a gift.
Anne Morrison, ever the children’s librarian, asked those attending to donate a culturally sensitive book to be gifted to the reservation. NAAF was recently granted 11 free little libraries. The books will be made available in the free libraries throughout the district. Selina, the O’odham language teacher pointed out how she would translate the younger children’s books into the native language to use in teaching.
Pastor Craig presented Juan and Selina with the wood carving of Jesus (olive wood from the Holy Land) and a handmade wooden cross made by a VPC member.
Juan and Selina were given checks and cash in the amount of about $360. We also presented them with a check of $570 raised by selling watercolor cards and art at the Holiday Plus Sale.
For anyone who missed the luncheon, Juan and Selina will return for the Mission Breakfast on December 14th at 8:30am.
