PARISH NURSE PAGES

Who is a parish nurse?

A parish nurse is a licensed RN who is committed to the healing mission of the church and who participates in the parish nursing curriculum and training to accomplish that goal. The parish nurse works closely with the pastoral staff of Valley Presbyterian Church. This person serves as liaison between community resources/services and church members.

Why Parish Nursing?

Jesus, in his ministry, healed the whole person (body/mind/spirit). Our spirits, minds, and bodies are interrelated, but sometimes we need help in making the connections in our everyday lives. Our hope is to provide information and support to improve the quality of life and health for all our congregation.

What is the role of the Parish nurse?

  1. As a health counselor, the Parish Nurse is available to discuss personal health problems, to recommend medical intervention when necessary, and visit congregation members in their homes, and when needed nursing homes, assisted living, adult care facilities and in hospitals; in coordination with the pastors.  (all information is kept confidential )

  2. As a health educator,  the Parish Nurse educates through classes, discussions, individual sessions, newsletters, and educational material.

  3. As a source of referrals, the Parish Nurse will provide individual holistic guidance, information, support and help with understanding the healthcare system. The Parish Nurse  will assist members in accessing the appropriate community resources to meet their health needs.

  4. As a health advocate, expand the concept of the body/mind/spirit health within the congregation and community. Based on the health needs of the congregation, recommend programs to the Faith and Health Committee that might meet those needs more effectively.
