General location and facts
Green Valley is just south of Tucson (see map) and only 25 minutes from the Tucson International Airport. At an elevation of 2900 feet above sea level Green Valley enjoys one of the best climates in the country. Annual temperatures average 80 degrees during the daytime and 50 degrees at night with more than 300 sunny days each year. (Click here for Green Valley weather averages)
Green Valley occupies some 5,000 acres of the original 46,696 acres granted to New Spain by the Spanish Crown in the 16th century. This land was once known as San Ignacio de la Canoa.
The surrounding area has many historic attractions such as early Spanish missions, frontier outposts, old mines and ranches. Tubac,, located 25 miles south , is the oldest European settlement in Arizona, having seen time as a frontier town, an army outpost and now a modern-day artists’ colony.
The San Xavier del Bac Mission north of Green Valley is a fine example of mission architecture. After many years of deterioration it has recently been restored to it’s original state and actively serves as a place of worship.
Tumacacori National Historical Park, just south of Tubac, is a Spanish mission built by the Franciscan priests in the early 1700s.
Economic Green Valley is primarily a retirement community. Major employers in the area are two copper mines, the home building and real estate industry, the Smithsonian Institution’s Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins which is about 20 miles southeast. The Farmers Investment Company, which grows and sells pecans and Caterpillar, Inc., which maintains a new equipment testing and personnel training facility near one of the copper mines.
There are three shopping centers in Green Valley and Sahuarita, an adjoining town, with in excess of 300 shops offering a broad choice of personal needs.
Government Green Valley is unincorporated with governmental facilities provided by Pima County.
Green Valley Community Coordinating Council, Inc. was formed as a quasi governmental body for the purpose of representing the community and communicating with the county commission. This body is made up of elected representatives from the 56 home owner associations comprising in excess of 90% of the population. GVCCC is an Arizona corporation albeit without legal authority.
Medical Medical facilities include three nursing homes, all highly rated, affiliated medical clinics, dental offices and ambulances with trained EMTs and paramedics. Specialists from Tucson maintain regular office hours in Green Valley.
Tucson has 10 hospitals along with a number of medical specialty centers. The University Medical Center and teaching hospital for the University of Arizona is located in Tucson. This facility has a broad medical specialty base and is a leader in the development of innovative treatment techniques.
Recreational Eight golf courses, twenty three swimming pools, shuffleboard courts, tennis courts and a hand ball court are all available to residents who are members of Green Valley Recreation. Also included are arts and crafts rooms, a computer club, sewing rooms, fitness centers, lapidary, clay and woodworking shops. There are twelve recreational / social centers. Access to the recreational facilities requires membership in Green Valley Recreation, Inc. Membership costs are nominal after a one time initiation fee. Media Green Valley has a bi-weekly newspaper, the Green Valley News and Sun, and it’s own radio station, KGVY. The area is served by seven television channels from Tucson and cable television. Current upgrade of the cable TV system is underway with conversion to fiber optics.
Education One elementary school. Continental School, with an enrollment of about 275.
Pre-school facilities are available at several area centers, including Los Ninos del Valle Preschool and daycare center.
